Opening

Welcome students back to school. Discuss the importance of creating a positive and organized classroom environment where everyone feels included and respected. Ask students to share their thoughts on why following classroom procedures is important. Address the common misconception that classroom procedures are not important for learning and give examples such as returning classroom tools broken so others can’t use it, putting homework in the wrong place and then not getting credit for it, feeling disrespected and not listened to, etc.

Work Period

1) Explain and model each classroom procedure step by step, setting clear behavioral expectations.

2) Engage students in role-playing scenarios to practice each procedure.

Recommendation: Make it a game by putting students in pairs and giving them a bingo-type sheet with a classroom procedure in each square. Give students a sticker for their square when they role-play the correct way to do each procedure.

3) Circulate around the classroom to monitor student performance and provide feedback. Support students in need of support and/or accommodations.

Digging Deeper

The class creates posters illustrating the key classroom procedures learned in the lesson to create ownership. Teachers can give one procedure to each pair to illustrate.

Closing

Reconvene the class and celebrate examples of good teamwork, effort applied to the task, and respectful, inclusive behavior throughout the game. Have students answer the following questions on a sheet of paper:

1) Is there a classroom procedure you do not understand? Explain.

2) How do you feel in your new classroom?

3) What concern or question do you have about your new classroom?
