Emotion Bingo: Recognizing Emotions Lesson Plan

Standard Addressed

Self-Awareness: the ability to understand and empathize with others

Objective

Students will be able to identify emotions in various scenarios and articulate their reasoning.

Assessment

Students can be assessed in the following areas:

-Explanation of emotion choices and rationale

-Recognition and identification of emotions

Materials

-Emotion bingo cards (download)

-Plastic bingo markers, beans, or another small item to use as a marker

Activating Prior Knowledge

Facilitate a discussion by asking students to think of a time when they felt a strong emotion, such as anger, frustration, or sadness. Students can share their experiences with the class and discuss what the emotion felt like.

Lesson

1)  Introduce that today’s lesson is about recognizing emotions in others and the importance of empathy. Allow the students to define the different emotions that will be covered in the lesson and provide examples of situations that might elicit those emotions. Address the common misconception that there is a “right” or “wrong” way to feel in a given situation. Emphasize that emotions are personal and vary from person to person.

Emotions: happy, sad, overwhelmed, scared, embarrassed, frustrated, angry, anxious, curious, confused, tired, excited.

2) Distribute the Bingo cards and Bingo markers. There are 10 Bingo cards (separate attachment - see Materials section above) plus a blank one to use to create more.

3) Explain the game rules: after each scenario is read (the Scenarios sheet is included with Bingo cards), mark the emotion that best fits the scenario. The goal is to get three in a row going up up/down, across, or diagonal.

4) Read the scenarios from the Scenarios sheet. Give students time to think and mark the correct spot.

5) When a student wins, reread the scenarios and ask the student to explain each of their choices, encouraging them to share their understanding of the emotions. There are no wrong answers as long as the student can explain their reasoning.

6) After a student wins, instruct the students to clear their boards. Start over with new scenarios.

Reflection

Facilitate a class discussion or journal entry where students reflect on how recognizing emotions can improve their interactions with others.
